No.4 Quarry is the famous Quarry of YiXing ZiSha quarries.

And DiCaoQing is their special one.

HOWEVER:
4th Quarry is famous, yes, but it does not boast the best ZiSha types in the industry!  Be careful of hype and misinformation preying on us customers' minds. THE TRUTH IS THAT: 4th Quarry does NOT boast the best ZiSha types in the industry.  NOR is 4th Quarry ZiSha the MOST PRECIOUS NOR THE RAREST!  

4th Quarry is famous in the ZiSha history SIMPLY because it BEATS the other 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th Quarries, in A)the tonnage production, and B)the NUMBER of ZiSha types available and mined.  Do not ever think that 4th Quarry ZiSha is famous because it is the rarest or because it is of the best quality!

On Point A:
4th Quarry ZiSha is THUS, NOT THE RAREST.

4th Quarry had simply produced the most tonnage of ZiSha (about 500-600 tonnes in its history) compared to 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th Quarry.  THUS, IF ONE WERE TO CHASE AFTER THE RAREST ZISHA amongst the 5 quarries, one WOULD BE "BETTER OFF" CHASING AFTER THE ZISHA from 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 5th Quarry!

On Point B:
4th Quarry SIMPLY avails the most types of ZiSha, compared to 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th Quarry.  Besides recording the most tonnage produced amongst all 5 quarries, the 4th Quarry also produces the most NUMBER OF TYPES of ZiSha, e.g. various types of ZiNi, LüNi, various types of DuanNi, etc.  There is absolutely NO TRUTH when hype-ers tell you "4th Quarry ZiSha is the BEST ZiSha quality type".

4th Quarry simply had produced the most tonnage, and availed the most types of ZiSha.  There is no such thing as its quality being the best, nor is it the rarest.  And to add on: 4th Quarry does not produce/avail any ZhuNi at all.

The most special one from the 5 quarries, is the 4th Quarry Di Cao Qing.  It is special because of its amazing patina formation and changes.  Lauded by the late Gu Jing Zhou, and even current Grand Masters including Shao Shun Sheng, said this clay is truly special.   Grand Master Shao also was recorded by us on video, saying that 4th Quarry Di Cao Qing besides being very expensive, it is almost un-"get"table, unprocurable.

No.1, 2, 3, 4, 5 quarries have all collapsed by two decades ago in 1990s-2000.
The 4th Quarry had collapsed in 1997.

Nobody can proclaim that they have No.4 Quarry DiCaoQing unless the governmental body had come in to verify.  The ONLY company entrusted is: Huang Long Yuan 黄龙源.

Many platforms claim their pots are "made of HuangLongShan 4th Quarry DiCaoQing", or other "4th Quarry ZiSha" clay types.

Anybody can say that (you can say yours too, ANYBODY can) but all these remain as marketing hype and are absolutely groundless claims.  Such words are not to be believed UNLESS the governmental body had come in to verify the stockpiles and issued strict labels.

Continuing: 

A ZiSha aficionado who aims to have gathered a strong collection, would not miss out on the 四号井 底槽青 。

Its qualities are unmistakable. 

1. It is a very difficult clay to work with. Very difficult. Its consistency is very hard, and is not as soft and malleable as other clay types.

2. Success rates out from the kiln is significantly lower than other ZiNi types.

3. Also, it is very fussy and picky about the firing temperature. Even 1°-2° of difference, will change the colour drastically.  It is very exacting.

4. Its Star qualities to us patrons and collectors, lie in its nurturing. Artists say that the process is both fascinating and beautiful.

Colour and Patina changes of 4th Quarry DiCaoQing continue for many months and after many steepings, and are fascinating.  Totally unlike other ZiSha clay types whereby their colour and patina changes are usually fast, and reach the plateau stage early.

But not 4th Quarry DiCaoQing: its colour changes and patina changes continue on and on as one uses it to steep tea over months.  They keep on changing and fascinating you, the user and owner of it.

Dearest Friends, this section is to correct all the myths and urban legends surrounding DiCaoQing and HuangLongShan, so that all of us do not fall prey to the countless hype around pots SIMPLY MARKETED AS "Rare DiCaoQing", "Original DiCaoQing" and "ore from HuangLongShan".  Do kindly, read on.

Point Number 1.
底槽青 Di Cao Qing (Basal Layer Purple Clay) is NOT a rare type of Purple Clay.  Do not let people sway you into purchasing Di Cao Qing for its rarity.  There is still an abundance of DiCaoQing in the stockpiles and are still being exacavated from HuangLongShan and other YiXing sites as we speak.

Point Number 2.
Most tonnage of ZiSha clay is mined from HuangLongShan 黄龙山.  It does remain till now, the biggest source of ZiSha.  Yes, as we speak, most ZiSha ores are coming off from HLS.  Again, there is nothing special when anybody announce that one’s pot is made from HuangLongShan ZiSha, simply because: Most ZiSha ARE, from HuangLongShan!!! HuangLongShan just produces the most tonnage of ZiSha.  Simple :-) and yes, you are further armed and are aware.

Point Number 3.
It doesn't mean anything special when a pot is made from Ore from HuangLongShan.  Fact is, HuangLongShan DOES NOT boast the best specimens for many ZiSha ore types.  YES, you heard this right :-).  For example, HuangLongShan does not have good Duan Ni, it does not boast of the best ZhuNi, nor XiaoMeiYao ZhuNi and ZhaoZhuangZhuNi, JiangPoNi, etc!  So it is totally ludicrous for sites saying that "4th Quarry ZiSha is the best."  Draw a palm to your face when you ever read such claims anywhere. No Grand Masters, nor self-respecting Artisans will ever say that Huang Long Shan boasts the best ZiSha!  The only times when sites say such things are when they want to hype/sell their wares.

Fact is: Up till year 2000 thereabouts, 4th Quarry ZiSha, e.g. 4th Quarry ZiNi, Duan Ni, have been sold at the same prices as types from other quarry sites.

The hype and fanfare about 4th Quarry was started and contributed by certain rich businessmen from a certain region in the Far East in the early 2000s.

We continue.

HuangLongShan also does not have TianQingNi as well, because the real and top, authentic and pure TianQingNi from DaShuiTan Quarry, costs 45,000rmb (US$7,000) per brick 捆 (15kg)。The best ones go up to 80,000rmb per brick.  If the Artist is extremely skilful and familiar with it, he can make successfully 10 pots from this one standard brick, i.e. the material cost price for this pot is already: US$700, just for the clay itself.  So do not believe if a TianQingNi pot is selling at less than US$1,000.   Do not also believe if somebody sells you a "4th Quarry DiCaoQing pot" by an unranked Artisan for less than $800 too.

Unranked Artisans have nothing to bank upon, to say nor sign off any work as being made of "4th Quarry DiCaoQing", nor any other rare nor esteemed clay.  Avoid being hoaxed or preyed upon.  Many had been.

A ranked Artist's first achievable Accreditation starts from L5: 工艺美术员 Gong Yi Mei Shu Yuan, "Accredited Artist".  Note the word: 员 Yuan (which means Member). It is NOT 师 Shi (meaning Master)! You have to be armed with this, because you will read some sites proclaiming that their unranked artisan has just gotten/is getting soon the "Certificate for Master of The Arts and Craft"!  Dear Friends, an unranked Artisan does NOT acquire a "Certificate for *Master* of The Arts and Craft" as their first certification/accreditation. The sites prey on you because you may not understand the Chinese language, and they know you do not know the proper translation of the Certificates/Accreditation, and hence they overglorify their artisan achieving the first Accredicated Rank by passing their "Certificate for MASTER of the Arts and Craft".   Unranked Artisans do NOT get this MASTER certificate.  They only get the certificate to be admitted as a "Member of the ZiSha Artists".   Only the L4 Assoc Master Artists will go on to get the "Certificate for Master of the Arts and Craft" and achieve the title of L3 Master Artist.  You are armed again.

And again, do note that: Half-Handmade pots are made by workers.  These workers are hired by factory owners and trained for 3-4 months and wala! : these workers can start making half-handmade pots.  True ZiSha Art lies in the realm and skill of a Fully-Handmaking Craftsmen, who needs 3 to 4 years of training at the very least.  If you spot any "Half-handmade pots made by a skilled Artisan of name so and so", be alarmed, be very alarmed, for: half-handmade pots are never made by FHM Skilled Craftsmen, they are made by WORKERS.  And, even if YOU DO GO TO YIXING now, half-handmaking is seldom practised in the industry now, as they have been squeezed out by the jigger-machining factories.  So, friends, half-handmade pots are made by workers, and not some overglorified Artisan with a prettily taken photo and facade.

Unranked craftsmen and craftsladies (no disrespect to them), generally will never touch YuanKuang DaHongPao, HuangLongYuan 4th Quarry DiCaoQing, BenShan LüNi.  If they "happen" to possess any brick of such rare and esteemed clay, they would RATHER sell it off THAN try making any pots out of it.  Each brick of clay is different in characteristics, the user must know how to: Hui Lian 回练 this clay (re-process) one time -> make test pieces out of it -> suffer the first few pots being malformed/deformed/cracked, before getting the hang of it.

Also, unranked craftsmen and craftsladies generally cannot command high prices for their works, and hence, even if the unranked artisan can afford to buy such an expensive brick of clay AND get to making successful pots out of it, it is STILL BOTH 1)AWKWARD for unranked artisans to sell their pots at high prices, and 2)AWKWARD for the patrons and collectors to be willing to buy from unranked artisans, because there is no guarantee of the authenticity of clay used.

Buying such esteemed clay from unranked artisans, is like buying medications from a college student (yet to achieve his M.D.), who runs a shed and sign off prescriptions and provide you with his medications from his carton. Would you trust that the medication is from approved manufacturing sources? Or imitation drugs?  Yes, you and I won't.

If ZiSha patrons and collectors want to purchase such works made from 1)YuanKuang DaHongPao, 2)4th Quarry Di Cao Qing, 3)Ben Shan Lü Ni, they want to be reassured of authenticity of clay used, and they will buy from Ranked Artists generally L4 AssocMasterArtists, L3 Master Artists, L2 Senior Master Artists and L1 Research Level Senior Master Artists, never from unranked artisans or L5 Accredited Artists.

Friends, do not fall prey to, nor be swayed just by the oft-used words "our pot is made from HuangLongShan ZiSha Ore, DiCaoQing".

Also, the National Authority also gives out STICKERS, for the Artists who bought and will be using this esteemed clay, These stickers will be pasted on the certificates that accompany the pot created and made by them, to be handed to the fortunate patrons.

The yellow Shield sticker also warns that: "YiXing City Huang Long Yuan ZiSha Clay Industry Pte. Ltd", in its provision/sale of this ZiSha Original Unadulterated Ore, accompanied will be this set of "YiXing City Huang Long Yuan ZiSha Property Rights Management Pte. Ltd." sticker labels; so as to provide for differentiation and identification of its ore type.  Pursuant to our trust in you (the user of this material), please use this in its true honest manner, please do not be involved in any fraudulent use of these sticker labels.  Usage of these sticker labels signify both 1)the industry's trust on you, and 2)your responsibility to the industry, therefore we ask of you, the user, to treat the use of this material and these labels with utmost gravity."

ZiSha being a ceramic clay type which can only be slab-built: this stiff and unyielding consistency provides one of the most challenging clays for any Artist to craft pots with.  Not all Artists have touched it nor tried it yet (the same goes for BenShan LüNi: many Artists and Craftsmen either have never handled it nor know how to make a pot out of BenShan LüNi).

Not many artists would want to attempt use it.  Because it is a very difficult type of clay to work with.  It is known to be very unyielding, hard.  Even if he or she purchases it, there is the important issue of learning to work with it, and trials and errors are definitely involved : failed, cracked, malformed, deformed pots coming off from the kiln.

The Artists themselves would have to command a high honest reputation as well, to couple with the reputation of Huang Long Yuan 4th Quarry Di Cao Qing.

Not all Artists, even Grand Masters, unfortunately, are honest.
You need to mix with the honest Grand Masters and Masters, and YiXing authorities.  You need to be at Ground Zero at YiXing to know who are the honest ones, who are apart from the dishonest ones (they can be very famous so we shall not reveal) who rose up the ranks by monies thrown in, e.g. by some overseas rich businessmen and partaking in the ubiquitous DAI GONG 代工 industry.
