Běn Shān zhū ní is one of my favorite clays and to have a cup made of it is a great joy. Assuming you have sight, I doubt I need to tell you how beautiful this cup is.
The craftsmanship is nearly flawless. You need only pick it up once and you can immediately tell it’s fully handmade. When you run your fingers over the cup you can almost visualize the artist’s movements while working on it. Fast, steady motions, carried out with precision by seasoned hands.
The shape, size and proportions are perfect, making the cup feel comfortable and natural to hold in the hand as well as pleasing to look at. The walls are impressively thin, resulting in this quite large (190ml when filled to the very top) teacup feeling like it weighs practically nothing with its mere 94g of mass. The thinness, however, doesn’t lend to the cup feeling fragile as it is quite sturdy, yet elegant.
The cup’s obvious beautiful aesthetic glow aside, to me it has an aura about it which speaks of the creator’s intentions being instilled in it and manifests in this inner beauty which elevates any tea session.
The Heart Sutra inscribed on the outside completes and complements everything mentioned above. It lends its own sense of calmness to both the cup and the drinker and is sure to add to the introspective nature of solo tea drinking.
